Gli Oneida sono tra i protagonisti della grande riscossa newyorkese del Duemila. Originari di Brooklyn come i Liars e gli Yeah Yeah Yeahs!, hanno resuscitato la violenza liberatoria del garage-rock dei 60, rimescolandola con acidi trip psichedelici, detonazioni hard/stoner-rock, germi di wave sintetica ed effervescenze kraut. E’ musica che schiuma un’elettronica ossessiva e metallica, in cui al basso sono riservati pattern elementari e ripetitivi, mentre le chitarre imperversano, tra accenni di garage e noise, e la batteria viene lanciata in esplosioni di violenza allo stato brado. Alla voce è affidato il compito di riflettere in uno specchio deformante questa musica, già di per sé non univoca: distante, distorta, filtrata in vari modi, spesso cantilenante in maniera demenziale. Una voce che rappresenta anch’essa, a modo suo, il Dna di questa band, che ha iniziato a suonare nei magazzini abbandonati di Brooklyn e non ha lasciato dietro le serrande l’energia, ma fa i conti con il fatto che, negli anni Duemila, il background di un musicista dev’essere sempre più stratificato ed è normale trovare nello scaffale di casa affiancati, MC5 e Suicide, o i Faust e i Kyuss.
Il nucleo originario del gruppo – che prende il nome da una tribù indiana – è formato dal chitarrista e cantante Papa Crazy (aka PCRZ), dal tastierista Bobby Matador (aka Fat Bobby), dal batterista Kid Millions e dal bassista e chitarrista Hanoi Jane (aka Baby Jane). Quattro nerd dall’aria rassicurante, che però sul palco fanno sfracelli, conquistandosi subito una preziosa nicchia nell’underground newyorkese.

PEOPLE OF THE NORTH
Started by Kid Millions and Bobby Matador of Oneida, People of the North is an ongoing but sporadic outgrowth of that restlessly experimental Brooklyn assemblage. Since the first tour in early 2003, POTn has served as another language emanating from the screaming mouth of the O. It has always included Kid and Bobby, and usually other members of Oneida as well. The entirety of Oneida has performed together under the POTn label at venues including the Frying Pan and the Mercury Lounge.
People of the North has provided compositions that have worked their way into Oneida’s most cherished repertoire, including “Up with People” (from Happy New Year) and “Lavender” (from The Wedding).
While there are no clearly defined boundaries separating POTn from Oneida, it might be fair to say that the music tends to be more staunchly devoted to minimalism, repetition, improvisation, and sternness than the wide-ranging efforts of the big brother band.
Deep Tissue was recorded at the Ocropolis in early 2009, with the participation of much of the O. The sessions were deep, and the skies were gray.
There is no specific or overt “influence” that particularly defines the music on Deep Tissue, but there’s kind of a 70's Germany/80's Chicago/90's Japan/00's Iran thing with People of the North, so maybe that’s there?
Some additional helpful reference points (beyond Oneida) could include Bo Hansson, Larry Young, Suicide, Silver Apples, Cluster, Wipers, The Heads, but it’s probably cooler if you listen and come up with your own touchstones, since who knows if you can hear any of this – at the end of it all, it’s just a list of sweet music.
The last thought – Showtime (member of the O, who plays on all of Deep Tissue) described Tehran to me once as “the smell of flowers and diesel exhaust” – and that seems like an excellent description of this album, although Deep Tissue is probably colder than Tehran.

IO MONADE STANCA
Dopo parecchi concerti ed ennemila chilometri, grazie ai loro sforzi coscienti, varie enormità e parecchie altre cose, questi simpatici musicisti hanno imparato che: *ogni essere umano è un seme *un seme può diventare pianta. Gaudio e gioia, studiarono un metodo per nutrire questi semi: concerto di impatto su tre livelli (dai di corpo, dai di sentimento, dai di intelletto), più simile agli antichi Misteri di epoca babilonese rispetto a qualsiasi altro evento a cui avete assistito. Per un’ottima fruizione, si richiede gentilmente di abbandonare volontariamente le usuali posture e associazioni di idee, nonché di venire con un cavallo in salute.
Assomiglia vagamente al rock, ma non pensateci troppo.
