The Magnetic North – the new group comprising of Erland Cooper, Hannah Peel and Simon Tong – are set to release the string-laden single ‘Rackwick’ to accompany the release of their much-anticipated debut album. Available on 7” single and digital download, the track comes with an exclusive B-side, ‘Hoy Sound’.
The Magnetic North began with a dream. Erland Cooper – he of Erland & The Carnival – was visited one night by Betty Corrigall, an Orcadian girl who took her own life in the 1770s after falling pregnant by a visiting sailor. Betty’s spirit had a clear message for Erland: he was to make an album about his home, the Orkney Islands, and he was to do it soon.
The dream set in motion a chain of events that drew in Carnival bandmate Simon Tong and singer-songwriter/orchestral arranger Hannah Peel, taking the London-based trio on a quest to the Orkney Islands, guided only by a 1930s travelogue titled ‘Orkney: The Magnetic North’, which seemed to lend itself perfectly to the project. As a result, the album’s tracks and sound are informed by real Orkney (Norse) place names, and by the landscape and the way of life on the far northern islands. ‘Rackwick’ – in case you were wondering – is the name of a sheltered bay and also where Betty tried to drown herself!
